Midland Wins the 2023 GPAC Women's Soccer Tournament
(Sioux City, Iowa) – Midland is the 2023 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Postseason Women’s Soccer Tournament Champion after posting a 4-3 overtime win over Dordt on Friday night in Fremont, Nebraska.
In a back and forth match from the onset fourth seed Dordt started the scoring with a quick goal just :23 seconds in as Karinna Tel found the net for the Defenders. Third seeded Midland countered at 39:44 with a goal by Caytlynn Garland to tie the game at 1-1 as that score would stand at halftime on a chilly night in Fremont.
In the second half Dordt scored at 63:22 on Tel's second goal of the night to go up 2-1. Midland came right back at 70:08 to tie the match at 2-2 on a netter by Tia Benjamin. The Warriors would strike again and go in front 3-2 just moments later at the 71:42 mark on a goal by Sydney Herren. Dordt would respond to force it to overtime with a 3-3 tie by scoring late in regulation time (85:24) on a goal by Ellie Stuart. In extra time Addison Castellanos' goal was the game winner to make 4-3 in the 93rd minute (93:04) to give the Warriors the hard fought win as their defense would hold to complete the overtime periods.
Midland has secured the GPAC's second automatic berth to the NAIA National Women's Soccer National Championship Opening Round November 16-18. Hastings, as regular season champion, secured the first automatic bid for the GPAC.
The NAIA Selection Show for Women's Soccer is next Monday, November 13.
The NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship Final Site is in Foley, Alabama, November 27 – December 4, 2023, at Championship Stadium.
