Chargers Lead GPAC Women's Golf after Day 1
(Spencer, Iowa) - The 2023 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women's Golf Championships get underway on Monday, May 1, in Spencer, Iowa, at the Spencer Country Club. The 54-hole event kicked off with 36 holes on Monday, with the final 18 to be played on Tuesday, May 2.
(Spencer, Iowa) - The 2023 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women's Golf Championships get underway on Monday, May 1, in Spencer, Iowa, at the Spencer Country Club. The 54-hole event kicked off with 36 holes on Monday, with the final 18 to be played on Tuesday, May 2.
The Chargers of Briar Cliff are on top of the team race with a 698 (351-347). Dakota Wesleyan is in second with 710 (359-351) while Mount Marty is in third at 721 (363-358). The College of Saint Mary and Northwestern are tied for fourth at 722.
Individually, two golfers are tied after two rounds of play. Helene Bergmo of Briar Cliff and Megan Hinker of Dakota Wesleyan each shot a 164. Last year's champion, Sofia Castelan of Morningside is one stroke back at 165 in third place while a pair of golfers, Emily Hulshof of Northwestern and Kelsey Heath of Mount Marty are tied for fourth at 171.
Morningside is the defending GPAC champion after winning the 72-hole event in 2022. Dakota Wesleyan was second one year ago, with Briar Cliff placing third.
Play on Tuesday (May 2) will get under way at 9:00am, going off on split tees.
The GPAC Women's Golf Champion receives an automatic berth in the NAIA Women's National Golf Championship in Silvis, Illinois, at TPC Deere Run. The NAIA National Women's Golf Championships are set for May 23-26, 2023. The GPAC medalist (if not on the qualifying team) also qualifies for the NAIA Championships.
